Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) are on the rise. While in the 1980s, VR was more science-fiction than actual reality, recent advances in hardware and software technology are enabling VR/AR. Today, VR and AR have matured and are beginning to influence our lives, paving the way to novel concepts in entertainment, engineering, education and science. Sound has a very important role in making these simulations authentic.
This course provides an introduction to the simulation of sound in VR and AR, covering topics from multiple disciplines, including: physics, signal processing, mathematics and computer science. A general overview of the relevant acoustical phenomena and underlying theory is given; auditory perception is considered, particularly the localization of sound; the established simulation algorithms are reviewed, and real-time implementations using efficient signal processing algorithms are discussed.
The course is an ideal start for researchers, engineers, and graduate students who would like to dive deeper into the field of virtual acoustics.
