Three best paper awards for AudioLabs PhD students

22.10.2024

The range of research areas at AudioLabs is impressive, and we are world-class in all of them. This was recently demonstrated by three awards for outstanding scientific work carried out at AudioLabs in the areas of speech processing, music information retrieval and audio signal processing.

AudioLabs PhD student Anna Leschanowsky received a Best Paper Award at Interspeech 2024 for the paper that she co-authored with Sneha Das from the Technical University of Denmark: ‘Examining the Interplay Between Privacy and Fairness for Speech Processing: A Review and Perspective’. The paper was presented at the 4th Symposium on Security and Privacy in Speech Processing, which was a part of this year‘s Interspeech 2024 Conference, held from 1 to 5 September in Greece. Interspeech is the premier global event on speech communication, speech science, and speech technology. You can read through the paper here.

The second award went to PhD students Peter Meier and Simon Schwär and their supervisor, Professor Meinard Müller. The three of them received the Best Paper Award of the International Conference on Digital Audio Effects (DAFx) for their paper ‘A Real-Time Approach for Estimating Pulse Tracking Parameters for Beat-Synchronous Audio Effects’ which was presented at the International Conference on Digital Audio Effects (DAFx2024) which took place from 3 to 7 September in the UK. DAFx attracts delegates from all over the world, from both academia and industry. In addition to the presentation of high-quality, fully peer-reviewed research papers, it features inspiring keynotes as well as tutorials and workshops. The proceedings of the conference are available online and the paper can be accessed here.

Last but not least, PhD student Julian Wechsler received the Best Student Paper Award (2nd Place) for his paper "Neural directional filtering: Far-field directivity control with a small microphone array" at the International Workshop on Acoustic Signal Enhancement (IWAENC) held from 9 to 12 September in Denmark. The conference has become one of the leading workshops for theoretical and practical aspects related to speech and acoustic signal acquisition and processing. The paper was co-authored by Srikanth Ray Chetupalli, Mhd Modar Halimeh, Oliver Thiergart, and Professor Emanuël Habets and is available at this page.
