The Audio Engineering Society announced that Professor Jürgen Herre, board member of the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen (AudioLabs) and a leading expert in audio coding, will deliver the Heyser Memorial Lecture at the 158th AES European Convention in Warsaw, Poland, on May 22 at 6:00 PM. In this highly anticipated presentation titled “It’s All About Perception” Professor Herre will draw upon his extensive experience in the field of perceptual audio coding, emphasizing that “audio is not merely data, its significance lies in how it sounds to us as human listeners.” His talk will delve into the importance of perceptual quality in audio engineering, drawing from his experiences in pioneering perceptual audio codecs such as MP3 and AAC, as well as his explorations in audio for VR/AR and AI-driven audio coding. The Heyser Memorial Lecture series, established in 1999, honors the remarkable contributions of Richard Heyser, an outstanding man, widely known for his ability to communicate new and complex technical ideas with great clarity and patience. The Heyser Series is an endowment for lectures that will bring to AES conventions eminent individuals in audio engineering and related fields. Professor Herre will reflect on his 36-year journey in audio and illustrate how the understanding of human audio perception has become fundamental and seminal to many generations of audio coding, processing, and rendering technologies. As he states, “The true goal of any skilled audio engineer should be to enhance quality in ways that are genuinely perceptible through listening.” The AES Europe Convention, taking place from May 22 to 24 in Warsaw, is one of the largest gatherings of audio professionals and students worldwide, featuring workshops, tutorials, and a vibrant trade show floor that fosters learning and networking. Join us for Professor Jürgen Herre's lecture and be part of this enriching experience at the AES European Convention!
