AudioLabs team members nominated as exceptional female scientists

Elena Burdiel, a former student at the AudioLabs, and María Luis Valero, a former scientist at the AudioLabs, are nominated for the “ARD/ZDF Förderpreis Frauen + Medientechnologie 2020“. This award honors exceptional female scientists with theses on media technology topics. Our colleagues are two out of ten nominees for the award, endowed with 10,000 Euros.
Elena applied with her master’s thesis: “Investigations into a Machine Learning Based Non-Guided Audio Bandwidth Extension for Music Signals”. María entered into the competition with her dissertation on “Acoustic Echo Reduction for Multiple Loudspeakers and Microphones: Complexity Reduction and Convergence Enhancement.”
Elena studied “Telecommunications Engineering” at the Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica de Telecomunicación from the Universidad Politénica de Madrid (EUITT-UPM), specializing in “Sound & Image”. In 2015, Elena started to study within the AudioLabs for her M.Sc. engineering degree in “Communications and Multimedia Engineering” at the FAU. She managed to study part-time besides working for the Audio and Media technologies department of Fraunhofer IIS.
María got a diploma in “Telecommunication Engineering” from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación from the Universidad Politénica de Madrid (ETSIT-UPM). After a few years of working at the Audio and Media technologies department of Fraunhofer IIS, she decided to do a PhD in electrical engineering at the AudioLabs department, which she finished last year. She is focusing on the development of acoustic front-end solutions, e.g. for communication applications and voice-controlled devices such as smart devices.
The ten nominees this year come from eight different university and college locations in Germany. The Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the Cologne University of Technology each have two of their female graduates in the top ten. The nominations include five master's theses, three bachelor's theses and two dissertations. The nominated theses cover a wide range of topics on basic principles and trend topics in audio and video technology, including current problems.
